The field of public history encompasses the many and diverse ways in which history is put to use in the world. Public historians work as historical consultants, museum professionals, government historians, archivists, oral historians, film and media producers, historic preservationists, and policy advisers, among many other job descriptions. Through readings, assignments, and fieldwork, this course will provide students with a solid foundation in the theoretical and practical skills relating to public history, including project design and preparation, writing and research, oral interviewing techniques, digital tools, and presentation methods for sharing history.
