This course surveys the long, complicated, and fascinating history of Islam. Since its founding in 7th century Mecca, Islam spread across the globe and now counts 1.8 million people among the faithful, almost a quarter of world’s population. Exploring its expansion from the Middle East, into Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America, this introductory course considers the diversity of political situations, cultures, and economies that have determined the historical trajectory of Islam. It also examines the cultural and religious exchanges that fostered the deep sense of belonging that has tied together Muslim communities across time and space. MWF 11
